Yokkaichi: View of the Mie River, from the series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido, c1833-34. Creator: Utagawa Hiroshige (Japanese, 1797-1858)

Yokkaichi: View of the Mie River, from the series The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido, c. 1833-34. This print is from the first Tokaido series by Hiroshige. Yokkaichi was historically known for a major market held there on the fourth day of every month. However, instead of the market, Hiroshige has chosen to present a windy scene in the marshes along the Mie River just outside the town. No written records survive to indicate why Hiroshige chose the marshes over the market, but the result is a dynamic display of the power of wind

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print by Utagawa Hiroshige transports us to Yokkaichi, a town in Japan known for its bustling market. However, instead of showcasing the lively market scene, Hiroshige takes us on a journey through the marshes along the Mie River just outside the town. The artist's decision to focus on this windy landscape rather than the vibrant marketplace remains a mystery as no written records survive to explain his choice. Nevertheless, what we are left with is an awe-inspiring depiction of nature's power and dynamism. In this color woodblock print from 1833-34, Hiroshige masterfully captures the essence of wind sweeping across the marshes. The gusts create ripples on the water's surface and sway tall grasses that line its banks. The viewer can almost feel the cool breeze against their skin and hear it rustling through leaves. Hiroshige's attention to detail is evident in every element of this composition - from delicate brushstrokes depicting distant mountains to intricate patterns formed by reeds in foreground. Through his skillful use of perspective and shading techniques, he creates depth and movement within a two-dimensional medium. As we gaze upon this artwork from Heritage Images' collection at The Cleveland Museum of Art, we are reminded not only of Hiroshige's artistic prowess but also of nature's immense beauty and untamed energy.
