Working on balloons, 1940

Working on balloons, 1940. From Life in the W.A.A.F. booklet on the Womens Auxiliary Air Force (WaF), in Tucks Better Little Book series. The WaF, whose members were referred to as WaFs, was the female auxiliary of the Royal Air Force during World War II, established in 1939. Its members did not serve as aircrew, but although they did not participate in active combat, they were exposed to the same dangers as any on the home front working at military installations. Among their duties were: crewing of barrage balloons, catering, meteorology, radar, aircraft maintenance, transport, communications duties including wireless telephonic and telegraphic operation. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Working on balloons, 1940" offers a glimpse into the remarkable contribution of women during World War II. The image is part of the Life in the W. A. A. F. booklet, which documents the Women's Auxiliary Air Force (WaF) - an essential female auxiliary division of the Royal Air Force established in 1939. In this snapshot frozen in time, we witness a group of dedicated WaFs diligently tending to barrage balloons. These brave women played a crucial role on the home front, working at military installations and facing similar dangers as their male counterparts serving overseas. The photograph not only captures their unwavering commitment but also highlights their diverse range of duties within the WaF. From catering to meteorology, radar operation to aircraft maintenance, transport logistics to wireless communication – these capable women proved that they were indispensable pillars supporting Britain's war effort. As we delve deeper into this historical moment through monochrome lenses, it becomes evident that gender barriers were shattered by these extraordinary ladies. Their dedication and professionalism shine through each face captured by Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd in London back in 1940. Let us commemorate these unsung heroines who fearlessly served their country during one of its darkest times. This poignant image serves as a reminder that strength knows no gender and pays homage to all those who contributed tirelessly behind-the-scenes for victory during World War II.
