EDITORS COMMENTS
Volunteer Games at Liverpool, 1862: A Grand Festival of Amateur Athleticism This photograph taken from the Illustrated London News in 1862, depicts the Volunteer Games held at the Mount Vernon Parade-ground in Liverpool. The event, organized by the Liverpool Athletic Club, attracted a multitude of gentlemen amateurs who eagerly contested for various prizes. The champion's gold enamel medal, presented by the Mayor, along with five gold, twenty-five silver, and twenty-five bronze medals, were up for grabs in this grand athletic competition. The excitement was palpable as the lower side of the ground was adorned with a commodious grand stand, which was soon filled to capacity. The grand stand, profusely decorated with banners, flags, and other ornaments, was a sight to behold. The programme for the day included a diverse range of athletic events, such as steeplechasing and flatracing, broadsword exercise, vaulting, Indian club exercises, boxing, gymnastics, walking-matches, jumping, pole-leaping, throwing the quoit, fencing, and wrestling. The day's events proved to be a resounding success, with Mr. A. Fairweather of Manchester taking home the coveted champion medal for winning the most number of prizes. The Manchester Athenaeum Gymnastic Club also made a significant impact, with members A. and J.
