The Volunteer Camp, on Crosby Sands, near Liverpool - from a drawing by William Woods, 1860. Training camp for the 1st battalion of Lancashire Rifles, ...under the personal supervision and command of Lieutenant-Colonel Bousfield...The tents were pitched for the purpose of inuring the volunteers to the hardship of camp life, as well as to bring them near the shooting-ground on the shore, where they might, by constant practice morning and evening, learn to become expert marksmen...Altogether there were forty-one tents, including the "canteen establishment, " where refreshments were supplied according to a fixed tariff... The men rose at five in the morning and then prepared for drill, rifle-shooting, skirmishing, &c, which generally began at six o'clock. Breakfast was afterwards had, and the majority of the volunteers returned to town...to engage in the business of the day...The same routine of training was observed in the evening. On every alternate Wednesday there was a battalion drill, when the "campaigning" was enlivened by two or three bands of music from Liverpool'. From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image, titled 'The Volunteer Camp, on Crosby Sands, near Liverpool - from a drawing by William Woods, 1860', offers a glimpse into the past of military training in Victorian England. The scene depicts a camp established by the 1st battalion of Lancashire Rifles, under the watchful eye of Lieutenant-Colonel Bousfield. The volunteers had pitched forty-one tents on the sandy shores of Crosby Sands, not only to acclimate them to the hardships of camp life but also to bring them closer to the shooting-ground. Here, they could hone their marksmanship skills through constant practice both morning and evening. The camp was a bustling hub of activity, with the 'canteen establishment' providing refreshments according to a fixed tariff. The volunteers rose early at five in the morning for drill, rifle-shooting, and skirmishing, which began at six o'clock sharp. After breakfast, most of the volunteers returned to their daily lives in town. The same routine was repeated in the evening, with the addition of lively battalion drills every alternate Wednesday, enlivened by the presence of two or three bands of music from Liverpool. This illustration, originally published in the 'Illustrated London News' in 1860, offers a fascinating insight into the dedication and discipline of the volunteers, who trained tirelessly to protect their community and hone their military skills. The image stands as a testament to the spirit of camaraderie and determination that defined the volunteer forces of the time.
