Visit of the Grand Dignitaries of State to the Imperial Infant, 1856. Creator: Unknown

Visit of the Grand Dignitaries of State to the Imperial Infant, [Paris], 1856....the Emperor received the felicitations of the Senate, Legislative Corps, Council of State. Magistracy, the Institute, clergy of different persuasions, the Municipal Corps, and deputations from the National Guard and from the Army and Navy, in the Throne room. The magistrates were in full costume, and the civil and military functionaries in full uniform. The Presidents of the various bodies, having congratulated the Emperor on the birth of an Imperial heir...were successively introduced into the apartments of the Pavilion Flore, when they returned to those occupied on the ground floor by the Prince. This is the moment chosen by our Artist to represent the most striking scene of that day. The chief dignitaries of France are grouped round the cradle of the infant whose birth has called forth so much enthusiasm throughout the empire'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'Visit of the Grand Dignitaries of State to the Imperial Infant' (Paris, 1856), captures a significant moment in French history. The image portrays Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie with their newborn son, the future Emperor Napoléon Eugène Louis Bonaparte, in the presence of the most esteemed dignitaries of the French state. The Emperor and Empress received an outpouring of congratulations from various institutions and organizations, including the Senate, Legislative Corps, Council of State, Magistracy, the Institute, clergy of different persuasions, Municipal Corps, National Guard, and Army and Navy. In the Throne room, the magistrates donned their full costumes, and civil and military functionaries wore their uniforms in honor of the occasion. The dignitaries, having offered their felicitations to the Emperor, were then introduced into the apartments of the Pavilion Flore, where they admired the newborn prince. Our artist chose this moment to immortalize the most striking scene of the day, as the chief dignitaries of France gathered around the cradle of the infant, who had brought such enthusiasm throughout the empire. The image offers a glimpse into the grandeur and opulence of the imperial court during this period, as well as the unity and pride of the French people in their new heir.
