View of Sitka Bay (taken from Governor's House) (northwest coast of America), 19th century. One of 65 lithographs that were included in the volume of maps published after the round-the-world voyage of the corvette Seniavin commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and carried out in 1826-29 under the command of Captain Fedor Litke (the Russian version of the name of Count Friedrich Lu¨tke, a Baltic German). The expedition began in Kronstadt (the main imperial Russian naval base near Saint Petersburg where Russian circumnavigations typically began and ended); it then traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. EDITORS COMMENTS
View of Sitka Bay (taken from Governor's House), Northwest Coast of America, 19th Century" is a stunning black and white lithograph created by German naturalists Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz and Godefroy Engelmann. This image is one of 65 lithographs that were published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I, the expedition, led by Captain Fedor Litke, began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was part of a series of Russian scientific naval surveys carried out in the first part of the 19th century. The lithograph depicts the picturesque Sitka Bay on the northwest coast of America, as seen from the Governor's House. The bay is dotted with islands, and the distant shoreline is outlined against the backdrop of a setting sun. The image captures the tranquility of the evening, with the buildings and houses of the Governor's Residence standing proudly on the shore. The lithograph is a testament to the rich geographical and historical heritage of the North American frontier. It was produced by the renowned French publishing house, Thierry & Fils, and was likely distributed through the firm of Edouard Hostein. The intricate details of the image, from the textured water to the individual trees, demonstrate the skill and artistry of Kittlitz and Engelmann. This lithograph is an essential addition to any collection of historic art, geography, or maritime history. It offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when the world was still being explored and documented. The image invites us to contemplate the vast distances and diverse landscapes that make up our planet, and the intrepid explorers who braved the unknown to expand our collective knowledge.
