The United States New Mail Steam-Ship "Adriatic", 1857....the largest and most powerful vessel afloat...The Adriatic was constructed in New York by the late Mr. George Steers...The machinery...consists of two of the largest oscillating engines that have ever been constructed...the calcium light, which she carries at her foretopmast-head, will not only be a security against a collision with another vessel, but, by enabling the look-out to discover objects at a distance of three or four miles in the dark, will greatly lessen the chances of accidents at night. She has accommodations for about 400 passengers, 300 of them being first-class...She is altogether a splendid specimen of naval architecture, and will doubtless prove to be by far the fastest vessel ever constructed in the United States. The total cost is estimated at little short of a quarter of a million sterling'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases the United States' New Mail Steam-Ship "Adriatic," built in 1857, an engineering marvel of its time. The Adriatic, an unidentified creator's masterpiece, was hailed as the largest and most powerful vessel afloat. Constructed in New York under the supervision of the late George Steers, this magnificent ship boasted state-of-the-art machinery, including two of the largest oscillating engines ever built. The Adriatic's advanced technology extended beyond its powerful engines. It was also equipped with a calcium light at its foretopmast-head, a groundbreaking innovation that served as both a safety feature, preventing collisions with other vessels, and a navigational aid, enabling lookouts to spot objects up to three or four miles away in the dark. With accommodations for approximately 400 passengers, 300 of whom were first-class, the Adriatic offered unparalleled comfort and luxury. This splendid specimen of naval architecture was expected to set new standards for speed, making it the fastest vessel constructed in the United States. The total cost of building this marvel was estimated to be just under a quarter of a million sterling. As depicted in this photograph from the "Illustrated London News" of 1857, the United States' New Mail Steam-Ship "Adriatic" represented the pinnacle of maritime innovation and design, leaving a lasting impression on the world of shipping and transportation.
