EDITORS COMMENTS
Thomas Alva Edison, the brilliant American inventor and businessman, is captured in this striking full-length portrait taken by renowned photographers Harris & Ewing in 1911. Edison, dressed in a formal suit and wearing a bow tie, exudes an air of confidence and intelligence. At the time of this photograph, Edison was in his late sixties, but his innovative spirit and tireless work ethic continued to drive him forward. The image was taken during a period of great productivity for Edison, who had recently established the Edison Laboratories in West Orange, New Jersey. He was working on numerous projects, including the development of phonograph records, motion pictures, and the first practical electric light bulb. The photograph was taken at the Harris Ewing Photographic Studio in Washington D.C., which was known for its high-quality portraits of prominent figures. The studio was run by George W. Harris and his wife, Martha Ewing Newcombe, along with her sister, Martha Kuntze. The Harris Ewing Collection, which includes this photograph, is now part of the George W. Krause Collection at the Library of Congress. Thomas Edison's groundbreaking inventions revolutionized the world and left an indelible mark on history. This photograph is a testament to his enduring legacy and the remarkable era of American innovation during the early 20th century.
