Temple at Naveshera, Kashmir, India, 1864. Creator: Samuel Bourne (British, 1834-1912)
Temple at Naveshera, Kashmir, India, 1864. One of the most important British expeditionary photographers, Samuel Bourne was propelled by his great desire to travel to lovely, remote locations and to record images of what he considered picturesque. From 1863 to 1869, he worked widely in India, making three major expeditions to the Himalayas. This exquisite photograph of the decaying Temple of Naveshera was taken on his nine-month, second journey to this stunning, mountainous terrain. He balanced the ordered, constructed architectural forms with glimpses of the majestic natural landscape. Bourne included a few people in the scene to add a sense of scale, but they are incidental to the subject matter and symbolism of the photograph, which stresses the dominance of natural forces

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Temple at Naveshera, Kashmir, India, 1864" showcases the remarkable talent of Samuel Bourne, one of the most significant British expeditionary photographers. Driven by his insatiable wanderlust and a passion for capturing picturesque landscapes, Bourne embarked on numerous expeditions to remote locations in India between 1863 and 1869. During his second nine-month journey through the awe-inspiring Himalayas, Bourne stumbled upon the decaying Temple of Naveshera. In this exquisite photograph, he skillfully juxtaposes the structured architectural elements with the breathtaking natural surroundings. The scene is dominated by majestic mountains and lush greenery that emphasize nature's overwhelming power. To provide a sense of scale within this grandiose landscape, Bourne included a few incidental figures in the frame. However, they merely serve as secondary subjects compared to the temple's symbolic significance and its harmonious coexistence with nature. Crafted using an albumen print from wet collodion negative technique - popular during that era - this image captures both historical value and artistic beauty. It stands as a testament to Bourne's mastery in capturing not only physical structures but also evoking emotions through his lens. Preserved by Heritage Art/Heritage Images and housed at The Cleveland Museum of Art (not affiliated with any company), this profound piece invites viewers into an enchanting world where man-made creations blend seamlessly with Mother Nature's splendor.
