A tank breaking through the wire at Cambrai, France, World War I, c1917-c1918. The British were the first to use tanks (or Landships as they were originally described) in the First World War. They were first deployed in September 1916 during the Somme campaign. The first really successful use of tanks occurred in the early stages of the Battle of Cambrai in 1917 when they broke through the German defences on the Hindenburg Line. Unfortunately the potentially decisive breakthrough was not exploited. From a box set of stereoscopic cards titled The Great War

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a pivotal moment in history during World War I. Taken by Realistic Travels Publishers, the image showcases a tank breaking through the wire at Cambrai, France, between 1917 and 1918. The British army was the first to utilize these innovative machines known as "Landships" during the war. Initially deployed in September 1916 during the Somme campaign, tanks proved to be instrumental in breaching German defenses on the Hindenburg Line. The Battle of Cambrai marked a significant turning point as tanks demonstrated their potential for decisive breakthroughs. However, despite this success, it is unfortunate that their full advantage was not exploited. This photograph is part of a box set of stereoscopic cards titled "The Great War" offering viewers an immersive experience into one of humanity's most devastating conflicts. Transportation and technology merge seamlessly in this monochromatic image as tracks mark the path forward for these armored vehicles amidst the chaos of battlefields. The print evokes feelings of awe and admiration for those who fought bravely on both sides while highlighting Britain's pioneering role in armoured warfare. As we reflect upon this historical moment captured over a century ago, let us remember those who sacrificed their lives and honor their legacy by striving for peace and understanding in our own time.
