Swedes. On the islands of Estonia, 1862. Creator: Karl Fiale

Swedes. On the islands of Estonia, 1862. Sheet 18 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

Swedes on the Islands of Estonia, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating image from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie," or "Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia," by Gustav-Fedor Pauli. This photograph, taken by Karl Fiale, is from sheet 18 of volume 1, published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to commemorate the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire. The Russian Empire, at the time, was a vast and diverse entity, encompassing numerous ethnic groups. Pauli's work aimed to document and preserve the traditional dress and customs of these groups, providing a visual record of their distinct identities. In this image, we see a group of Swedes residing on the islands of Estonia. Estonia, then part of the Russian Empire, was home to various ethnic groups, including Swedes, Finns, and Estonians. The Swedes, descendants of Swedish settlers, had been living in Estonia since the late Middle Ages. The Swedes in the photograph are depicted in their traditional attire, which includes long, knee-length coats, white shirts, and black vests. The women wear long, full skirts, often adorned with intricate patterns, and headscarves. The men wear hats with wide brims, and some carry bags or other belongings. This photograph is a testament to the rich cultural diversity of the Russian Empire during the 19th century, and the efforts of scholars like Pauli to document and preserve these traditions. The album, with its detailed illustrations and essays, offers a valuable insight into the ethnic groups of the empire and their unique histories and cultures.
