With the Stream, 1885. Artist: Joseph Swain

With the Stream, 1885. The cartoon depicts the new Conservative administration rowing in the Liberal stream towards a General Election. Towards the stern is the Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer, Sir Michael Hicks Beach and, at the bow, is the unpredictable Conservative MP, Lord Randolph Churchill. Having rather unexpectedly taken office, the Conservatives were more or less keeping to the proposed programme of their Liberal predecessors. It was suspected, however, that Lord Randolph entertained ambitions to succeed Sir Michael as the Leader of the Commons. From Punch, or the London Charivari, August 1, 1885

With the Stream, 1885

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating political cartoon that offers a satirical commentary on the state of British politics in the late 19th century. Created by Joseph Swain and John Tenniel, this engraving depicts the new Conservative administration rowing in the Liberal stream towards an upcoming General Election. The cartoon showcases two prominent figures within the Conservative Party: Sir Michael Hicks Beach, who serves as Chancellor of the Exchequer and occupies a position towards the stern of their rowing boat, and Lord Randolph Churchill positioned at the bow. While it was expected that they would continue with their Liberal predecessors' proposed program after unexpectedly taking office, suspicions arise regarding Lord Randolph's ambitions to succeed Sir Michael as Leader of Commons. The artwork cleverly utilizes symbolism to convey its message. The rushing stream represents liberalism while highlighting how conservatives are navigating through unfamiliar waters. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to this caricature-filled scene featuring various politicians rowing together towards an uncertain future. This print not only captures a significant political event but also reflects upon broader themes such as power struggles within parties and shifts in political ideologies during this era. It stands as a testament to Joseph Swain's artistic prowess and his ability to use satire effectively in conveying complex ideas about society and politics. Overall, "With the Stream, 1885" remains an intriguing historical artifact that invites viewers to delve into Victorian-era politics while appreciating its artistic merit.
