Strawberry Thief, c 1936. Creator: William Morris (British, 1834-1896)
Strawberry Thief, c 1936. Perhaps the most recognizable of Morriss textiles, Strawberry Thief celebrates the thrushes in Kelmscott Manors garden. May Morris remarked, " You can picture my Father going out in the early morning and watching the rascally thrushes at work on the fruit beds and telling the gardener who growls, I d like to wring their necks! that no bird in the garden must be touched." With Strawberry Thief, Morris perfected the indigo-discharge process, which required the entire cloth to be dyed blue before it was bleached and block printed, in this case with more colours than any of his other textiles

Strawberry Thief, c 1936 - A Timeless Celebration of Nature's Beauty
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the iconic textile design known as "Strawberry Thief" created by the renowned British artist William Morris in 1936. With its intricate details and vibrant colors, this piece has become one of Morris's most recognizable works. Inspired by his observations at Kelmscott Manor's garden, Morris captured the mischievous thrushes that frequented the fruit beds. His daughter May fondly recalled her father watching these rascally birds in the early morning hours, protecting them from harm despite their thieving ways. In creating Strawberry Thief, Morris perfected a unique indigo-discharge process. The cloth was first dyed entirely blue before being bleached and block printed with an array of colors - a technique that set this artwork apart from his other textiles. The craftsmanship behind this masterpiece is truly remarkable. Made from plain weave cotton and originating from Merton Abbey in Walthamstow, England, it exemplifies Morris's dedication to preserving traditional arts and crafts techniques during the late 19th century Arts and Crafts Movement. Today, this exquisite textile is preserved for all to admire at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Its rich heritage art status reminds us of William Morris's immense contribution to British artistic history. This print captures every intricate detail so admirers can appreciate its beauty up close while paying homage to one of Britain's greatest artists.
