Two Standing Figures (Study for A Game of Billiards), c. 1807. Creator: Louis Leopold Boilly

Two Standing Figures (Study for A Game of Billiards), c. 1807. Louis-Leopold Boilly made these two figure studies for his painting A Game of Billiards (see photo). In the final composition, the left figure from the study appears toward the right end of the billiard table, and the other figure appears at the left end. Boillys genre scenes like A Game of Billiards-animated with a variety of participants-made him the premier chronicler of Parisian life from the Revolutionary to the Restoration periods. In the drawing, Boilly concentrated on the isolated figures, simply sketching in rudimentary lines for legs and the table and carefully examining light effects on the upper part of the mens suits

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Louis Leopold Boilly's "Two Standing Figures (Study for A Game of Billiards)" created around 1807. These figure studies were made as a preparation for his renowned painting, "A Game of Billiards". In the final composition, one figure from this study is positioned towards the right end of the billiard table, while the other stands at the left end. Boilly was celebrated for his genre scenes that vividly depicted various participants and captured the essence of Parisian life during the Revolutionary to Restoration periods. His ability to animate these scenes made him an esteemed chronicler of this era. In this drawing, Boilly focused on isolating these two figures, using rudimentary lines to outline their legs and the table. He meticulously examined how light played upon their upper garments, showcasing his keen attention to detail. The artwork itself is rendered in black chalk with gray and brown tones, skillfully employing stumping techniques to create depth and texture. The framing lines are executed in brown-black chalk. This remarkable piece belongs to The Cleveland Museum of Art's collection and is part of Heritage Art/Heritage Images' portfolio. It serves as a testament to Boilly's talent as a French artist who masterfully captured everyday moments with great finesse and precision.
