Sir Walter Raleigh, (1933). Creator: Unknown
Sir Walter Raleigh, (1933). Portrait of English writer, poet, courtier, adventurer and explorer Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618). Raleigh was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, who knighted him in 1585. In 1584-1589 he was involved in an unsuccessful attempt to establish a colony in North America, but did introduce tobacco and the potato to Britain from the New World. Accused of treason by Elizabeths successor, James I, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London and eventually put to death in 1618. From " Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte", a book of cigarette-card portrait miniatures of figures in world history from the last four hundred years. [Germany, 1933]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sir Walter Raleigh, a prominent figure in English history. The portrait captures the essence of this multi-faceted individual who was not only a writer and poet but also a courtier, adventurer, and explorer. Created in 1933 by an unknown artist, the image depicts Raleigh with his distinguished beard and dressed in traditional Elizabethan attire. Raleigh's close relationship with Queen Elizabeth I is highlighted as he was one of her favorites and even received knighthood from her in 1585. Known for his ambitious spirit, Raleigh attempted to establish a colony in North America between 1584-1589 but faced failure. However, he did bring back two significant contributions to Britain - tobacco and potatoes from the New World. Despite his achievements, Raleigh's life took a tragic turn when he was accused of treason by James I after Queen Elizabeth's death. He endured imprisonment within the Tower of London before ultimately being put to death in 1618. This particular print is part of "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a book featuring cigarette-card portrait miniatures that depict influential figures throughout history over four centuries. Produced in Germany during the thirties (1930s), it offers viewers an intriguing glimpse into both the sixteenth century world that shaped Sir Walter Raleigh and the twentieth-century perspective through which this image was created.
