Sir Jung Bahadoor, K.S.I. of Nepaul, from a sketch by one of our special artists, 1876. Sir Jung Bahadoor, at his first meeting with the Prince [of Wales], came out in very plain style. He had on an ordinary straw-coloured dress of cotton, and a pugree of purple and gold was wrapped round his gold-lace cap. He is what is called a Goorkhali - that is, of a race which has sprung from marriages between the Ghoorkas and the original people of the plains...Jung Bahadoor has much of the Turanian type in his face; he has a beard, but the hairs are so wide apart that the outlines of the cheeks and chin can be seen distinctly through it. There is one marked difference between the Ghoorkas and the Ghoorkhalis. The former are all short, while the latter are tall; and this is very marked in the still erect figure of Jung Bahadoor'. Sir Jung Bahadoor, K.S.I. of Nepaul, captured in this 1876 sketch by one of our special artists, presents a striking image of the Nepalese diplomat in his first meeting with the Prince of Wales. Bahadoor, a Goorkhali, or descendant of marriages between the Ghoorkas and the original people of the plains, came to Britain in plain attire, donning an ordinary straw-coloured cotton dress and a purple and gold pugree wrapped around his gold-lace cap. The Turanian type is evident in Bahadoor's face, with a prominent beard that reveals the outlines of his cheeks and chin. Distinguished from the short Ghoorkas, Bahadoor's tall stature is evident in this engraving, which showcases his still erect figure. Bahadoor was a Maharaja, or king, of Nepal and held the title of Colonel Commissary. His political influence extended beyond Nepal, as he was also the Prime Minister of the country. This black and white portrait, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the appearance and demeanor of a significant figure in Nepalese and British colonial history.
