EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the heroic rescue mission of two Short Sunderlands during World War II. In 1940, the torpedoed merchant ship Kensington Court found itself in a perilous situation, stranded about 120 miles west of Lands End after being attacked by U-32. Thirteen shots of gunfire had left the vessel severely damaged and sinking rapidly. Amidst this chaos, two brave pilots, F/Lt Thurston M. W. Smith and F/Lt John Barrett, took to the skies in their Short Sunderland aircraft to save the lives of the ship's master and 34 crew members. The artists' impression showcases these remarkable men in action as they navigate through a vast expanse of blue sea towards their desperate comrades. The Short S. 25 Sunderland was an impressive British flying boat patrol bomber designed by Short Brothers for RAF use during wartime. Named after the city of Sunderland in northeast England, it proved its mettle time and again with daring rescues like this one. For their extraordinary feat, both F/Lt Smith and F/Lt Barrett were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), recognizing their exceptional bravery and skill under immense pressure. This historic image serves as a testament to human resilience amidst adversity, highlighting not only the courage displayed by these pilots but also showcasing how transportation played a vital role during times of war. It stands as a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there are always heroes willing to risk everything for others' safety and well-being.
