Copper Copper Alloy Figurine Hindu Hinduism Shiva Siva South Asian South East Asia Southeast Asia Southeast Asian Statuette
EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 12th century copper alloy figurine, known as Shiva's Family, showcases the rich artistic heritage of South Asia during the medieval period. The sculpture, currently housed at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), depicts Shiva, the Hindu deity of destruction and regeneration, in the company of his consort Parvati and their two children, Ganesha and Kartikeya. Shiva is depicted in his classic form, with a third eye on his forehead, matted locks, and a serene expression. Parvati, his wife, is shown seated on his left side, holding a lotus flower in her left hand and a rosary in her right. Their son Ganesha, the elephant-headed god, is shown standing to the left of Shiva, with his broken tusk, a symbol of wisdom, and a modak, a sweet rice cake, in his hands. Kartikeya, the god of war, is depicted as a young boy riding on a peacock, holding a spear in his hand. The intricate details of the figurine, from the delicate folds of the garments to the expressive faces of the deities, demonstrate the advanced metalworking techniques of the time. The use of copper alloy adds a warm, rich color to the sculpture, making it a stunning example of Hindu art from Southeast Asia. The location of this figurine in LACMA's collection is a testament to the global reach of Asian art and the importance of preserving and showcasing cultural heritage for future generations.
