The Ship "Bengal" rescuing the crew of "The Child of the Regiment", 1858. Engraving from a sketch by Theodore Walter, chief officer of the Child of the Regiment. The barque Bengal, Captain Oates, from Calcutta, rescued the crew of the American ship Child of the Regiment on the 15th of November last, in the Atlantic...[The US ship was damaged in a storm and sprung a leak]...we sighted the barque Bengal; signalled that we were in distress, and asked her to stay by us for the night. Next morning...the gale unabated; seven feet of water in the hold; pumps completely choked; men thoroughly worn out; sails blown away; and no prospect of the ship keeping afloat another day...[We] succeeded in getting all hands on board the Bengal, where we were very kindly received by Captain Oates...It was to us an awful and affecting sight to see that noble ship - for such she was - struggling with the elements in her last agonies. As the day closed we lost sight of her, but she was seen to go down in the early part of the night by a vessel astern of us. The Child of the Regiment was a fine specimen of maritime architecture, registering 1200 tons, and had on board 2000 tons of guano, consigned to Anthony Gibbs and Sons". From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
Bengal," under the command of Captain Oates, saves the crew of the stricken "Child of the Regiment" in 1858. The American vessel, which registered 1200 tons and was carrying 2000 tons of guano consigned to Anthony Gibbs and Sons, had been battered by a relentless storm that left it taking on water and with pumps that were completely choked. With seven feet of water in the hold and sails torn to shreds, the crew signaled for help as they faced an uncertain future. The sight of the distressed ship was not lost on the passing Bengal, which responded to the call for assistance. The crew of the Child of the Regiment was relieved to find refuge on the Bengal, where they were met with kindness and support from Captain Oates. As they watched their own ship succumb to the elements, the crew of the Child of the Regiment could only reflect on the narrow escape they had experienced. The Bengal, a true maritime marvel, fought valiantly against the storm but ultimately went down in the night, leaving a poignant reminder of the unpredictable and often treacherous nature of the sea." This evocative description brings to life the drama and danger of life at sea in the 19th century, as well as the camaraderie and cooperation that could emerge in the face of adversity. The image of the Bengal rescuing the crew of the Child of the Regiment serves as a testament to the resilience and determination of those who braved the vast and unpredictable waters of the Atlantic.
