Scene from the new farce of "The Slow Man", at the Adelphi Theatre, 1854. Creator: T. H. Wilson. Scene from the new farce of "The Slow Man", at the Adelphi Theatre, 1854. Creator: T. H. Wilson

Scene from the new farce of "The Slow Man", at the Adelphi Theatre, 1854. London stage show....the extraordinary scene in Mr. Mark Lemon's farce...in which the epic poet, who is the hero of the piece, is intruded upon by Hector Rackett and his friends of the fancy, with the pet-boxer, much to his personal disquiet, and altogether to the ruin of the great work which he had projected. The headlong revelry...is novel in stage incident and, had it been sufficiently prepared for, would have created for the drama in which it was introduced a permanent reputation...Writers of drama have too great a tendency to run into routine; and thus...one production resembles another too closely. Combinations, like the present, drawn from real life, not only present novelty, but give vitality to situation. Mr Lemon is, therefore, to be commended for the boldness which he has shown in the invention of the incident'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, created by T. H. Wilson, depicts a scene from the new farce of "The Slow Man" that graced the stage at the Adelphi Theatre in London during 1854. The extraordinary scene in question comes from the pen of Mr. Mark Lemon and features the epic poet, who is the hero of the piece, in a state of personal disquiet. The poet, deeply engrossed in his work, is suddenly intruded upon by Hector Rackett and his friends of the fancy, along with the pet-boxer, leading to chaos and the ruin of the great work he had projected. The headlong revelry of the intruders is novel in stage incident and, had it been sufficiently prepared for, would have created for the drama in which it was introduced a permanent reputation. The writers of drama have a tendency to fall into routine, resulting in one production resembling another too closely. However, combinations like the present, drawn from real life, not only present novelty but give vitality to situation. Mr. Lemon is, therefore, to be commended for the boldness which he has shown in the invention of this incident. The print captures the moment of surprise and dismay on the poet's face as he is interrupted, while the intruders, led by Hector Rackett, are shown in various stages of merriment and excitement. The pet-boxer, a popular entertainment of the time, adds an element of spectacle to the scene. Overall, this print provides a glimpse into the lively and unpredictable world of Victorian theatre and the farces that entertained audiences during the mid-19th century.
