The second fight between Harry Paulson and Tom Paddock, 1851 (late 19th or early 20th century). An illustration from Famous Fights. Tom Paddock (1824-1863) fought Harry Paulson three times, twice in 1851 and once more in 1854. Paddock won the second fight, staged in Belper, Derbyshire, in the 86th round but a riot broke out and afterwards both boxers were jailed for 10 months with hard labour. Paddock went on to be English heavyweight champion between 1856 and 1858

XOS1765668 Panathenaic prize amphora with lid and figure of Athena, 363-2 BC (terracotta) by Greek, (4th century BC); 89.5 cm; J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles, USA; (add.info.: The Panathenaia festival was held every four years in Athens to honour the goddess Athena. Special narrow necked amphorae filled with oil were given as prizes for athletics, music etc. This one bears two inscriptions: NIKODEMOS EPOIESEN (Nikodemos made it) and TON ATHENETHEN ATHLON ([Prize] of the Athenian Games). The decoration is attributed to the painter of the wedding procession - on the other side Nike is shown crowning the winner of a boxing match.
