EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a scene from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera "Don Giovanni," first performed in Prague in 1787. The opera, with a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, is based on Moliere's play "Don Juan, or the Stone Banquet" from 1665. In this depiction, the infamous Don Giovanni is seen attempting to seduce Zerlina, a country girl, as he sings the seductive serenade "Give me thy hand, oh fairest (La ci darem la mano)." The scene is beautifully rendered by artist Charles A. Buchel in this 1914 print. The 18th century Austrian setting is brought to life through the intricate details of the buildings and pillars, the elegant costumes of the characters, and the play of light and shadow. Don Giovanni, a man of many occupations, is shown in his role as a seducer, surrounded by the columns of a grand building, while Zerlina, a lady of the countryside, looks unsure and hesitant. The scene is filled with the rich colors and textures of the 18th century, transporting us back in time to an era of classical music and grand performances. The urn and pillars add an air of antiquity and history to the scene, while the time of day, with the moon casting a soft glow over the scene, adds to the romantic and enchanting atmosphere. This print is a testament to the enduring power of Mozart's music and the timeless nature of his operas.
