Scene from "A Bottle of Smoke" at the Adelphi Theatre, 1856. London stage production. This little piece continues to justify the favourable opinion we expressed of it on its production. The plot, as we have observed before, is remarkably slight, but the merriment which it elicits is unbounded. This is no doubt attributable in a great degree to the excellent acting of Wright, who plays the part with an evident relish of the humours of the situations. Pretty Miss Wyndham proves herself a most natural and earnest actress in the little part of Lucy Merton, and really seems the clever industrious artist she assumes to be. Our Illustration represents the close of the piece, where Mr. Cambricson, convinced of his folly in suspecting Lucy, endeavours to make amends by turning fuchsia-doctor himself. We have no doubt but this merry little piece will have a long and prosperous run'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a scene from the 1856 London stage production of "A Bottle of Smoke" at the Adelphi Theatre. The exact creator of this image remains unknown, adding to its historical allure. The play, which received favorable reviews during its premiere, is described as a "merry little piece" with a "remarkably slight" plot. However, the production's success can be largely attributed to the exceptional acting of Charles Mathews as Mr. Cambricson and the earnest portrayal of Miss Wyndham in the role of Lucy Merton. In this image, Mr. Cambricson, realizing his error in suspecting Lucy, attempts to make amends by playing the role of the fuchsia-doctor himself. The photograph offers a glimpse into the theatrical world of the mid-19th century, providing a fascinating look at the costumes, sets, and actors of the time. The lively energy and spirit of the production are palpable in this scene, making it a valuable addition to the historical record of Victorian theatre.
