EDITORS COMMENTS
This image showcases The Royal Academy Prize Architectural Design: an exchange, designed by T. H. Watson, in 1862. The design, although the creator is unknown, represents an architectural masterpiece that transports us back to the 19th century. The exchange, which is not explicitly stated to be for commercial use in the text from Illustrated London News, is depicted as a grand architectural structure with a unique blend of Italian Gothic style from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The central focus of the design is a large, spacious hall, surrounded by coupled iron columns that support the roof. The roof itself is a marvel of engineering, constructed from iron, wood, and glass, with a stunning glass dome at its peak. Towards the front of the building, we can see the Lloyd's Great Room and Captains' Room, among other spaces. Above these areas is a great hall, available for public meetings, balls, and other events. At the east end of the building, a grand staircase can be found, while at the west end, a chamber of commerce is located, complete with waiting rooms. The roof covering the great hall features three rows of dormer windows, adding to the overall grandeur of the design. The lateral thrust of the vaulting in the great hall is resisted by flying buttresses, ensuring the structural integrity of the building. The exchange is raised upon a terrace, with the east and west sides separated from the streets by arcades of coupled columns, spanning an impressive length of 250ft. This architectural marvel, with its intricate design and innovative use of materials, is a testament to the ingenuity and creativity of the architects and engineers of the time. Despite being over a century and a half old, the design continues to inspire and captivate audiences with its timeless beauty.
