EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the powerful presence of Richard I, King of England. As the third son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard I reigned as King from 1189 to 1199, leaving an indelible mark on British history. Known by his formidable title "Richard Coueur de Lion" or "the Lionheart" he embodied bravery and strength. The portrait captures Richard in profile, donning a regal crown atop his head and a majestic helmet symbolizing his warrior spirit. His piercing gaze reflects both determination and wisdom acquired through years spent abroad during the Third Crusade. However, it was during this time that misfortune struck when Leopold V of Austria captured him on his return journey from the Holy Land in 1192. Despite facing captivity in Germany for some time, Richard's resilience remained unwavering. The engraving highlights not only his military prowess but also emphasizes his role as a religious crusader fighting for Christianity's cause. Tragically, Richard met his untimely demise at the hands of an infected arrow wound while engaged in war with France. This image immortalizes him as a monarch who dedicated himself to defending his country against external threats. Preserved by The Print Collector without commercial intent, this historical artifact serves as a reminder of King Richard I's enduring legacy within medieval England—a ruler whose lionhearted spirit continues to inspire generations today.
