EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, taken from the St. Asaph side of the bridge, showcases the exterior of Rhuddlan Castle in Rhuddlan, Wales, during the Rhuddlan Royal Eisteddvod in 1850. The image offers a glimpse into the past, with the western towers of the castle dominating the scene. Rhuddlan Castle, a square fortification with six towers, was originally founded by Prince Llewelyn ap Seisyllt in 1020. The ruins cover approximately two and a half acres, and the lofty western walls, covered in moss and ivy, present a very picturesque aspect. The portcullis at the south-eastern entrance of the castle is engraved in this print, adding to its historical allure. A wooden bridge has been erected over the ditch for visitors to cross, and booths and tents for refreshments have been set up around the ancient moat on all sides. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, captures the spirit of the Victorian era, with its focus on documenting and preserving history through the media. The Rhuddlan Castle ruins, with their towering walls and ivy-covered exterior, have remained a popular tourist attraction and a source of inspiration for artists and historians alike. This photograph print is a testament to the enduring allure of the Middle Ages and the rich cultural heritage of Wales.
