The Residency, Lucknow, India, c1860
The Residency, Lucknow, India, c1860. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 began in the town of Meerut and soon erupted into other mutinies and civilian rebellions across many regions of Company-ruled north-central India. The rebellion posed a considerable threat to British power in that region and it was contained only with the fall of Gwalior on 20 June 1858. The rebellion is also often known as the Indian Mutiny, the Sepoy Mutiny, the Great Rebellion, the Revolt of 1857 and occasionally, in India, as the First War of Independence. From The History of the Indian Mutiny, volume VII, by Charles Ball, published by The London Printing & Publishing Company (c1860)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Residency, Lucknow, India" during the year 1860. The image takes us back to a significant period in Indian history - the Indian Rebellion of 1857. This rebellion originated in Meerut but quickly spread across northern-central India, posing a major threat to British rule in the region. "The Residency" served as a symbol of British power and authority during this tumultuous time. It witnessed numerous mutinies and civilian rebellions that aimed to challenge colonial dominance. The resilience displayed by both sides is evident from the fact that it took until June 20th, 1858 for Gwalior to fall and for the rebellion to be contained. Also known as the Indian Mutiny or Sepoy Mutiny, this event is sometimes referred to as the Great Rebellion or Revolt of 1857. In India, it holds particular significance as it is occasionally regarded as the First War of Independence. This monochrome engraving provides us with a glimpse into an era when tensions were high and historical events unfolded within these very walls. Charles Ball's publication on "The History of the Indian Mutiny" further adds depth and context to this remarkable visual record. As we observe this print today, we are reminded of how history shapes nations and how even seemingly ordinary buildings can become symbols of resistance against colonial powers.
