Reception of the Prince at Kandy, Ceylon, 1876. Creator: Unknown
Reception of the Prince at Kandy, Ceylon, 1876. The future King Edward VII meets locals....the great Kandyan chiefs...were marvels to behold, and their costume was at once the most singular and gorgeous I have ever beheld. Upon their heads they wore pincushion-shaped hats of about eighteen inches square...Upon the top were ornaments in a style which, for want of a better name, I should call Chinese...The jackets were made of superbly rich and stiff brocaded silk. These jackets were made to rise and stick sharply out at each shoulder, exactly as I have seen in certain specimens of old armour...the lower garments...consisted of masses of muslin folds...In the bulge in front were stuck two or three daggers...Upon their fingers were rings with an immense amount of jewels'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Reception of the Prince at Kandy, Ceylon, 1876: A Cultural Encounter This evocative photograph captures a significant moment in the history of the British Raj in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), as the future King Edward VII meets local chiefs during his visit to the ancient city of Kandy in 1876. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the rich cultural tapestry of the region, where Eastern and Western traditions collide. The great Kandyan chiefs, dressed in their traditional attire, are a marvel to behold. Their headdresses, about eighteen inches square, are pincushion-shaped hats adorned with ornaments in a style reminiscent of Chinese art. The jackets they wear are made of superbly rich and stiff brocaded silk, with shoulders that rise and stick sharply out, resembling old armor. The lower garments consist of masses of muslin folds, with two or three daggers stuck in the bulge in front. Upon their fingers, the chiefs wear rings with an immense amount of jewels. The contrast between the traditional Cinghalese attire and the Prince's military uniform is striking. Edward VII, then the Prince of Wales, wears a pith helmet, a symbol of British imperialism, while the chiefs are barefoot, their feet covered only by muslin. The scene is a metaphor for the meeting of two vastly different worlds, as the British Raj extended its influence over the Eastern world. This photograph, published in the Illustrated London News in 1876, offers a unique insight into the fashion, culture, and history of the 19th century. It is a testament to the enduring allure of the East, which continues to captivate and inspire us today.
