EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a rare Chinese coffee-pot from 1845, created by the talented John Wykeham Archer. The coffee-pot was part of the esteemed collection belonging to William Beckford, a British critic, travel writer, and art collector who had an undeniable passion for works of decorative art. This particular item was discovered at his home, Lansdown Tower near Bath, after his passing when the entire collection went up for sale. The catalogue of this remarkable auction boasted an impressive array of treasures including exquisite furniture pieces, cabinets adorned with intricate designs, breathtaking paintings that told stories untold, antique gems and coins that whispered tales from distant lands. Among these treasures were also agates and mosaic tables that showcased exceptional craftsmanship alongside sculptures and Etruscan vases steeped in history. However, it is the "matchless china" described in the catalogue that truly captivates our attention. The Chinese Coffee-pot featured here stands out with its unique bamboo pattern; each reed meticulously perforated throughout its entirety. Its delicate beauty is enhanced by its monochromatic palette captured flawlessly in black and white by Archer's skilled lens. This photograph originally appeared in the "Illustrated London News" back in 1845 when it first mesmerized Victorian readers with its unusual design. Today we have the privilege to admire this extraordinary artifact through The Print Collector's lens as it transports us back to a time where tea ceremonies held great significance and objects like this coffee-pot were cherished for their rarity and elegance.
