Progress of the International Exhibition Building: Night effect of the Western Dome... 1862. Creator: M Jackson

Progress of the International Exhibition Building: Night effect of the Western Dome, seen from the Royal Horticultural Society's Gardens, [Kensington, London], 1862. View of the Western Dome...as it appears after nightfall, when the works axe carried on by artificial light...However tastes may differ as to the fitness of these enormous superstructures...one thing is quite certain, and that is, that the construction of the domes is in itself an architectural triumph. These huge circumferences, equal in size to any erection of the like kind in the world, have been raised in a...number of weeks...The works of the domes are being pushed forward as rapidly as possible; and that on the western side, although somewhat delayed by want of material, is very little behind that on the eastern side, which was begun long before it. The construction being in different hands, a generous rivalry has sprung up between the builders, which has resulted in something like a neck-and-neck race between them at last. The terminals of the domes are in course of construction in the areas beneath them, and will be hoisted full-grown and bodily to their summits. They are to consist of a gilt ball and spike, the former being seven feet in diameter'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862
