EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, hailing from the Illustrated London News in 1850, showcases The Procession near the Corn Exchange during the Warwick May Fair Show. The image transports us back in time to an era of grandeur and pageantry, as Queen Elizabeth I, dressed in a regal white riding robe and purple velvet mantle, graces the scene atop a magnificently caparisoned steed. Her majesty is accompanied by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who is depicted in the procession as he appeared at the entry of Kenilworth Castle in 1675. Queen Elizabeth I, who once rested at Warwick on her route to the Princely Pleasures of Kenilworth Castle in 1575, is connected to the annals of Warwick through the institution of Lord Leicester's Hospital. The Earl of Leicester, represented by Robert Dudley, is renowned for founding this beautiful building in the High-street. The procession boasts an excellent representation of the Earl, with horsemen and horsewomen, men and women, all dressed in Elizabethan attire. The pageant is filled with an abundance of nature, as flowers and garlands adorn the participants and banners and flags wave in the breeze. Dogs and horses add to the lively atmosphere, making this a true celebration of the era. This photograph, an engraving from the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the cultural events of the nineteenth century, showcasing the rich history and tradition of Warwick and its connection to the monarchy.
