The Five Principal Institutions founded by the late Dr. Andrew Reed, 1862. Creator: Unknown

The Asylum for Fatherless Children at Reedham, the Infant Orphan Asylum at Wanstead, the Idiot Asylum at Earlswood, the London Orphan Asylum at Clapton, and the Royal Hospital for Incurables at Putney. Throughout the whole course of Dr. Reed's connection with these institutions he never received one shilling from them, but was always a large, and often a secret, contributor to their funds. This self- denying devotion is still further illustrated by the following bequests: £100 to the Wanstead Asylum, the interest to be applied for ever in the purchase of playthings for the children, to be given them at Christmas. £300 to the London Orphan Asylum, the interest to be applied for ever to provide the children with suitable lectures on the natural sciences, to be delivered, with illustrations, each winter. £1000 to the Reedham Asylum for Fatherless Children. £1000 to the Asylum for Idiots. Finally, these institutions, thus endowed, their noble founder bequeaths to his country, "with an earnest prayer that they may be watched over with wisdom and benevolence; that they may be preserved in efficient operation; and that they may remain, age after age, memorials of, that Divine charity which exalteth and glorifieth a people'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print showcases The Five Principal Institutions founded by the late Dr. Andrew Reed in 1862. The institutions depicted are The Asylum for Fatherless Children at Reedham, The Infant Orphan Asylum at Wanstead, The Idiot Asylum at Earlswood, The London Orphan Asylum at Clapton, and The Royal Hospital for Incurables at Putney. Dr. Reed's selfless dedication to these institutions is evident in his lifelong commitment to their welfare, as he never received any compensation from them. Instead, he generously contributed substantial sums of money to their funds. The photograph is accompanied by a poignant passage from The Illustrated London News, published in 1862, which further illustrates Dr. Reed's unwavering devotion. The passage reveals that he bequeathed significant sums of money to each institution, with the interest from these bequests to be used for the benefit of the children and residents. For example, £100 was bequeathed to the Wanstead Asylum to provide playthings for the children at Christmas, and £300 to the London Orphan Asylum to fund winter lectures on natural sciences. Dr. Reed's final bequest was a substantial £1000 each to the Reedham Asylum for Fatherless Children and the Asylum for Idiots. The photograph serves as a powerful reminder of Dr. Reed's enduring legacy and his deep commitment to charitable causes. The institutions he founded continue to operate today, providing essential services to those in need. Dr. Reed's bequests have enabled these institutions to thrive and remain memorials of the Divine charity that exalteth and glorifies a people.
