Presentation of the Grand Cordon of the Legion of Honour to the Sultan, at Constantinople, 1856. Creator: Unknown

Presentation of the Grand Cordon of the Legion of Honour to the Sultan, at Constantinople, 1856. Monsieur...Thouvenel went in great state from the French Embassy to the Palace of Tcheragan, to present to his Majesty the insignia of the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, and an autograph letter from the Emperor Napoleon. In his speech to the Sultan, M. Thouvenel alluded to the sentiments of high esteem and sincere attachment which the Emperor Napoleon entertains for the Sultan; and concluded by saying that these insignia were a new pledge of the memorable alliance between Turkey and the Western Powers, for the purpose of repelling the unprovoked aggression of Russia, and taking such steps as may be deemed necessary to maintain the independence of the Ottoman empire. The reply of the Sultan was not less complimentary'. From "Illustrated London News", 1856

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, taken in 1856, the French Minister to the Ottoman Empire, Monsieur Thouvenel, presents the Grand Cordon of the Legion of Honour to the Sultan in Constantinople. The presentation took place at the Palace of Tcheragan and marked a significant moment in the diplomatic relations between France and the Ottoman Empire. The Legion of Honour is one of France's most prestigious orders, and the Grand Cross is its highest distinction. Thouvenel was entrusted with the task of presenting this honour to the Sultan as a symbol of the strong alliance between Turkey and the Western Powers. The alliance was formed to counter Russia's unprovoked aggression against the Ottoman empire. Thouvenel arrived at the palace in great state, accompanied by an entourage of diplomats and officials. In his speech to the Sultan, he expressed the deep esteem and attachment that Emperor Napoleon had for the Ottoman ruler. He also emphasized that the presentation of the Grand Cross and the accompanying autograph letter from the emperor were a testament to the historic alliance between the two nations. The Sultan's reply was equally complimentary, and the ceremony marked a significant moment in the diplomatic history of the Ottoman Empire and France. The photograph captures the grandeur and pomp of the occasion, with the Sultan seated on his throne, dressed in traditional Ottoman attire, and Thouvenel presenting the insignia of the Legion of Honour. The image is a reminder of the complex diplomatic relationships that existed between European powers and the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century.
