Portrait of the Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands Don John of Austria, 16th century. Don Juan of Austria (1545-1578) was the illegitimate son of the Emperor Charles V, and half-brother of Philip II of Spain. With the Spanish, Venetian and Papal fleets he defeated the Turks at the Battle of Lepanto on 7 October 1571. He was appointed Governor of the Netherlands in 1576.
