Pont du Gard, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham
Pont du Gard, Nimes, France, 1951. Pont du Gard, Nimes, France, c AD 150. The Roman aqueduct in the south of France over the River Gardon is the highest of all elevated Roman aqueducts, and one of the best preserved. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic Pont du Gard in Nimes, France, taken in 1951 by the talented artist Shirley Markham. The Roman aqueduct, dating back to around AD 150, stands as a testament to ancient engineering marvels and remains remarkably well-preserved. Markham's artistic journey began at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration under renowned tutor Mervyn Peake. Influenced by esteemed British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden, Markham developed her unique style of drawing. During her time in Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome itself, Markham sketched classical buildings that would later inspire her work. After graduating from Central School of Art, she embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer producing book illustrations, comics cartoons menus and programmes. However promising her professional path seemed to be, societal expectations prevailed when she married in 1957. Middle-class women during that era were often expected to prioritize their roles as homemakers and mothers over pursuing careers outside the home. Unfortunately for Markham's admirers and the art world alike, this meant abandoning illustration altogether. For many years following her departure from the art scene due to lack of confidence or opportunity for return; however now we are fortunate enough to unveil Markham's hidden talent through this published collection of previously unseen works found tucked away in an attic - a true treasure trove for art enthusiasts everywhere.
