A Photograph of the Aurora Australis, c1908, (1909)

A Photograph of the Aurora Australis. The Lights in the Sky Indicate the Position of the Streamers, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the mesmerizing beauty of the Aurora Australis, also known as the Southern Lights, during Ernest Shackleton's second Antarctic expedition in 1908. The image showcases the ethereal streamers of light dancing across the night sky, indicating their position against a backdrop of darkness. Ernest Shackleton, an Anglo-Irish explorer renowned for his daring expeditions to Antarctica, achieved remarkable feats during this particular journey. Alongside three companions, he set a new record by reaching Farthest South latitude at 88° S, coming within a mere 97 geographical miles from the elusive South Pole. This achievement marked one of the greatest advancements towards conquering this uncharted territory in exploration history. In addition to their groundbreaking progress on land, Shackleton and his team conquered Mount Erebus – an active volcano that dominates the Antarctic landscape with its majestic presence. Their courage and determination earned them accolades from King Edward VII who knighted Shackleton for his extraordinary achievements. Tragically, Ernest Shackleton's life was cut short during his third and final oceanographic expedition to sub-Antarctic regions when he passed away at just 47 years old. However, through stunning visual records like this print from "The Heart of the Antarctic" we can still appreciate and be inspired by his indomitable spirit and unwavering passion for exploration.
