EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures a significant moment in American history - the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. The pennant, carried by Edith Lee-Payne, serves as a tangible memento of this historic event advocating for civil and economic rights for African Americans. The white felt pennant is adorned with black lettering that boldly states "MARCH ON WASHINGTON / FOR JOBS AND FREEDOM / AUGUST 28,1963". Above an image of the Lincoln Memorial are the words "I WAS THERE" emphasizing the personal connection to this pivotal gathering. Below, two hands - one white and one black - joined in a handshake symbolize unity and solidarity. Despite its age, this artifact has endured smoke stains from its time at the march, serving as a reminder of the passion and determination exhibited by those who fought for equality during that era. Now preserved within the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this pennant stands as both a symbol of resistance against racial injustice and an important piece of cultural heritage. It represents not only Edith Lee-Payne's participation but also highlights the collective struggle faced by African Americans throughout history. Through this photo print, we are reminded of how far our country has come while acknowledging that there is still work to be done to ensure equal rights for all citizens.
