The Peace Commemoration - the Fireworks in Victoria-Park, 1856. Creator: Unknown
The Peace Commemoration - the Fireworks in Victoria-Park, 1856. Celebrating the end of the Crimean War in London. Twenty-one guns followed as a Royal salute, and then followed...the burning a large quantity of coloured fire...and the effect against the dense black sky was very striking. Of the fireworks, as a whole, it may be said that, although they were in tolerable quantity, and by a judicious spreading out lasted quite the prescribed time promised, they were not very novel or very striking. The aerial parts, namely, the flights of rockets and others of their kind, were good...[and] the spectators were soberly pleased in general, and once or twice broke out into mild applause...There was not a single drunken person, and but one policeman...In short, nothing could be more creditable to the inhabitants of this district than their conduct on this occasion'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of jubilation during The Peace Commemoration in Victoria-Park, London, 1856. The image commemorates the end of the Crimean War, a significant event in British history. The scene is set against the backdrop of a dark, star-studded sky, as the crowd eagerly awaits the grand fireworks display. Twenty-one guns roar in salute, marking the official end of the war, followed by a spectacular burst of colorful fireworks. The Illustrated London News reported that the fireworks, while not particularly novel or striking, were in tolerable quantity and lasted the promised time. The aerial parts, such as rockets, were praised for their quality. The spectators, a sea of well-dressed men, women, and children, displayed sober delight, with occasional bouts of mild applause. The conduct of the crowd was exemplary, with not a single drunken person in sight and only one policeman present to maintain order. This peaceful and orderly celebration was a testament to the pride and unity of the London community during a time of great historical significance.
