EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the fashionable world of Paris in March, 1856, as depicted in this image from the pages of the "Illustrated London News." The elegant ensembles showcased here represent the height of urban style during this period. The first outfit features a lady in a maroon silk robe, accessorized with a hat made of silk pouffe, adorned with jet squares, tufts of feathers, and black velvet ribbons. Her mantelet, or cape, is made of black velvet, with a braid trimming and a narrower lace flounce. The second outfit showcases a robe of pearl-grey Broquet de soie, with a corsage in basques and braces formed from a feather trimming. The sleeves are also adorned with feathers and closed with a trimming of velvet buttons. The third ensemble features a robe of blue taffetas, with an open corsage revealing a white muslin chemisette and a black velvet ribbon. The sleeves are high and ornamented with a bow of ribbons to match. The hats in this collection are equally striking, with one made of rose taffetas and black velvet, adorned with ostrich feathers, and the other made of silk pouffe and black velvet, with a trimming of black velvet and feathers.
