Pan and Syrinx, 1720. Creator: Jean Francois de Troy (French, 1679-1752)
Pan and Syrinx, 1720. Subjects drawn from classical mythology posed a challenge for painters: they demanded skill in depicting the human body in complex poses, as well as knowledge of ancient texts and an ability to interpret them imaginatively. Jean Francois de Troys rich colours and voluptuous figure types were ideal for depicting the sorts of mythological subjects favored by his elite patrons, which generally focused on themes of love. In a myth recounted in the Roman poet Ovids Metamorphoses, the nymph Syrinx fled from the lecherous advances of the god Pan. Trapped at the edge of a river, she begged for a way to escape, and the gods transformed her into reeds. Pan later gathered these reeds to form the pan pipes, the musical instrument forever associated with him

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Jean Francois de Troy's masterpiece, "Pan and Syrinx" painted in 1720. The French artist skillfully tackles the challenge of depicting classical mythology subjects, requiring a deep understanding of ancient texts and imaginative interpretation. De Troy's expertise shines through his use of rich colors and voluptuous figure types, perfectly suited for portraying mythological themes centered around love - a favorite among his elite patrons. The painting depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where the nymph Syrinx desperately flees from the advances of Pan, the god of nature. Cornered at the river's edge, she pleads to escape her predicament. In response to her plea, the gods transform her into reeds. Later on, Pan gathers these very reeds to create the pan pipes - an instrument forever associated with him. De Troy masterfully captures this moment in time with intricate details and complex poses that showcase his mastery over human anatomy. This artwork not only demonstrates his technical prowess but also highlights his ability to breathe life into ancient tales through visual storytelling. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this oil on canvas painting is a testament to De Troy's artistic brilliance and serves as a reminder of how classical mythology continues to inspire artists across centuries and cultures.
