The Pall Mall Apollo or R-ty in a Blaze, 1816

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating and satirical print by Isaac Cruikshank that offers a glimpse into the political and social climate of early 19th century Britain. The artwork portrays the Prince Regent, George IV, dressed as Apollo, the Greek god of music and arts. However, instead of being revered, he finds himself in an embarrassing predicament. In this comical scene, McMahon, depicted as Mercury (the messenger of gods), pours a chamber pot over the flaming head of the Prince Regent. This act symbolizes criticism towards his extravagant lifestyle and questionable leadership. On one side stands Lady Hertford, known to be the Prince's mistress at that time. She inspects the Venus de Medici statue with curiosity while subtly adding to the mockery surrounding their scandalous relationship. Notably present on the extreme right is Brougham portrayed as Hercules - Henry Peter Brougham was a prominent politician during this era. His inclusion suggests his opposition to George IV's rule and perhaps alludes to his strength in challenging royal authority. Through clever use of color and symbolism, Cruikshank highlights themes such as cross-dressing (as seen with George IV), power dynamics within aristocracy, mythology intertwined with politics, and societal critique through satire. This artwork can be found at Guildhall Library and Art Gallery today where it continues to serve as both historical documentation and artistic expression reflecting upon an intriguing period in British history.
