EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a group of influential figures from the early 20th century Russian literary and artistic scene. Taken in 1914 by Karl Karlovich Bulla, it features renowned poets Osip Mandelstam, Korney Chukovsky, Benedikt Livshits, and artist Yury Annenkov. Osip Mandelstam (1891-1938), Korney Chukovsky (1882-1969), and Benedikt Livshits (1887-1938) were celebrated Russian poets known for their profound contributions to literature. Tragically, both Mandelstam and Livshits fell victim to Stalin's purges later in their lives. Yury Annenkov (1889-1974) was a talented painter, scenographer, and illustrator who made significant contributions to the world of art. His creative vision added depth to various projects throughout his career. In this intimate portrait, the four men are captured sitting together with an air of intellectual camaraderie. Their expressions hint at the passion they shared for their respective crafts as they engaged in lively conversations about poetry, literature, and art that shaped their era. Preserved within the collection of the Institute of Russian Literature IRLI (Pushkin-House), this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of these remarkable individuals' enduring legacies. It offers us a glimpse into a time when creativity flourished amidst political turmoil—a testament to the power of artistic expression even in challenging circumstances.
