Operating on Guanyus Arm, 1840s. Creator: Katsushika ?i (Japanese, about 1800-after 1857)
Operating on Guanyus Arm, 1840s. This imposing image bears the signature and seal of Oi, daughter of Katsushika Hokusai, the best known Japanese artist in the Western world. Oi served in her fathers studio as an assistant and then collaborator during the early 1800s, when Hokusais popularity in Japan was at its zenith. The dazzling composition, design sense, and palette of colourful mineral pigments in this hanging scroll record her artistic powers at their finest. The event pictured here comes from a 16th-century Chinese novel, The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which enjoyed great popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries among educated Japanese society. Here Oi portrayed the passage in which the legendary 3rd-century military leader Guanyu undergoes a bloodletting to remove poisons received from an arrow wound. During the operation, with his attendants cowering at the sight of his bloody arm, Guanyu remains focused on a game of go (similar to the Western game of chess) and--judging from the sumptuous food and drink in the background still life--looks forward to a satisfying meal

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Operating on Guanyus Arm, 1840s" showcases the remarkable talent of Katsushika ?i, a renowned Japanese artist from the early 1800s. The signature and seal of Oi, daughter of the legendary Katsushika Hokusai, grace this impressive image. Serving as her father's assistant and collaborator during his peak popularity in Japan, Oi demonstrates her own artistic prowess through this hanging scroll. The composition is nothing short of dazzling, with a keen sense of design and a palette rich in vibrant mineral pigments. Inspired by "The Romance of the Three Kingdoms" a beloved Chinese novel from the 16th century that captivated educated Japanese society during the 18th and 19th centuries, Oi brings to life an intriguing passage. In this scene, we witness the legendary military leader Guanyu undergoing a bloodletting procedure to rid himself of poisons caused by an arrow wound. While his attendants cower at the sight of his bloody arm, Guanyu remains focused on playing go (a game similar to chess). The sumptuous still life in the background hints at his anticipation for a satisfying meal after enduring such an ordeal.
