"Norham Castle", from the photographed edition of the "Liber Studiorum", by J. M. W. Turner, 1864. '...a photograph from any work of art...in which variety of colour is a prominent characteristic must be full of relative untruthfulness and can scarcely be other than inharmonious. Hence, photographs from the oil pictures and water-colour drawings of Turner...are to the last degree disappointing...On the other hand, photographs from rare proof engravings after, or monochrome drawings by, Turner, in which (as through the medium of photographs) colour does not interfere with the scale of gradation, are entirely satisfactory...For this reason photographs from Turner's "Liber Studiorum" - a collection which has only appeared in the form of sepia drawings or engravings thereof - possess, so to speak, a genuine documentary value...Turner did not consider that his task was completed when he placed his drawings in the hands of the engravers. On the contrary, he bestowed unremitted attention on the engraver's progress, frequently altering, correcting, and making additions...the photographs from the original drawings, taken by Mr. Thurston Thompson...and published by Messrs. Cundall and Downes, are by far the more estimable'. From "Illustrated London News", 1864

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph print of "Norham Castle" from J. M. W. Turner's "Liber Studiorum" captures the essence of the artist's meticulous attention to detail and mastery of light and shadow. Turner, known for his vibrant use of color in his oil paintings and watercolor drawings, created a series of sepia drawings and engravings for the "Liber Studiorum", which are beautifully preserved in this photographed edition.
The monochrome tones allow for a focus on the intricate lines and textures within the composition, showcasing Turner's skillful rendering of architectural elements and natural landscapes. The castle stands majestically against a backdrop of rolling hills and a dramatic sky, evoking a sense of both grandeur and solitude.
Photographer W. J. Linton has expertly captured the nuances of Turner's original drawing, highlighting the contrast between light and dark to create a sense of depth and atmosphere. The careful attention to detail in this photograph print truly brings out the timeless beauty of Norham Castle as envisioned by one of Britain's most celebrated artists.
Through this photographic reproduction, viewers can appreciate Turner's dedication to his craft as well as his collaborative process with engravers to ensure accuracy in translating his vision onto paper. This print serves as a valuable document preserving not only the image itself but also the artistic legacy left behind by one of history's greatest landscape painters.
