The new lake, Kew Gardens, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The new lake, Kew Gardens, [London], 1860. Great pains have been taken during the past year to improve the pleasure-grounds or Arboretum. Besides continued planting, the formation of new walks, and the better keep of the very extensive lawns, there are two features in anticipation which will add greatly to the beauty and attractions of these grounds. One is the new lake, five acres in extent, now nearly completed...This lake, with its beautifully wooded island, is situated midway between the Palm-house and the Thames, on the left of the Zion vista. It will be supplied until water from the Thames by a pipe or drain at high water. The other is the erection of what has long been the great desideratum of the gardens - a conservatory or temperate greenhouse, on a scale commensurate with the extent and importance of this great national establishment, and destined for the reception of all trees and shrubs from extra-tropical countries, especially our own colonies'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The new lake, Kew Gardens, London, 1860', showcases a serene and picturesque scene from one of the most renowned botanical gardens in the world. The image, captured by an unknown photographer, offers a glimpse into the ongoing transformation of Kew Gardens during the mid-19th century. At the heart of this idyllic setting, a new five-acre lake is nearing completion, adding significantly to the gardens' beauty and allure. The lake, with its wooded island, is situated between the Palm-house and the Thames, nestled along the Zion vista. Its creation is just one of the many improvements made to the pleasure-grounds or Arboretum during this period. Continued planting, the formation of new walks, and the better keep of the extensive lawns were also underway. Another highly anticipated addition to Kew Gardens was the construction of a conservatory or temperate greenhouse. Long considered a necessity for this prestigious national establishment, this grand structure was intended to house trees and shrubs from extra-tropical countries, including the gardens' colonies. As shown in this photograph, the new lake, with its tranquil waters and surrounding greenery, is a testament to the dedication and hard work put into enhancing the already impressive Kew Gardens. The anticipation of the upcoming conservatory further underscores the commitment to expanding the gardens' horticultural offerings and maintaining their status as a leading botanical institution.
