The New Houses of Parliament - Bas-reliefs in the Prince's Chamber - the Death of Sir Philip Sidney at Zutphen, 1857. One of a...series of historic tableaux which enrich the walls of this elegant apartment...This is the well-known touching incident of the gallant and accomplished Sir Philip Sidney refusing a cup of cold water, which had been brought to quench his thirst, in favour of one of his poor wounded soldiers, whom he declared required it more than himself. This noble act is well told in this bas-relief. The wounded General is seated at the foot of a tree, supported by a halberdier; two are bearing the body of the wounded man whose case had called forth the generous act of commiseration from the noble-minded Sidney'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white print depicts a scene from the Prince's Chamber in the New Houses of Parliament, showcasing the bas-relief "The Death of Sir Philip Sidney at Zutphen" from 1857. This intriguing artwork is part of a series of historic tableaux that adorn the walls of this elegant apartment. The scene portrays the well-known and poignant story of Sir Philip Sidney, the gallant and accomplished English courtier and poet, who refused a cup of cold water offered to him during the Battle of Zutphen in the Netherlands. Instead, he selflessly gave it to a wounded soldier, whose need was greater than his own. In the bas-relief, the wounded general is seated at the foot of a tree, supported by a halberdier, while two other soldiers bear the body of the fallen comrade. Sidney, clad in armor and carrying a sword, stands beside the tree, his hand extended in a gesture of generosity and compassion. The scene is a testament to the chivalric values of the 16th century, and the noble-minded Sidney's act of altruism continues to inspire admiration to this day. This engraved artwork, published in the Illustrated London News in 1857, is a fine example of the Gothic Revival style that was popular during the Victorian era. The print offers a glimpse into the rich history and interior decoration of the Houses of Parliament, which was undergoing extensive renovation and restoration during that time. The bas-relief serves as a reminder of the courage and selflessness of Sir Philip Sidney, a man whose legacy continues to resonate in literature and politics.
