EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of the new foreign baggage warehouse at St. Katherines Docks in 1845. The facilities, situated along the picturesque River Thames in London, served as a bustling hub for passengers' luggage arriving from or departing to the Continent. Additionally, it catered to the landing of various imports such as foreign cattle and fruit. The photograph showcases several key features of this impressive establishment. A large General Waiting-Room, complete with a separate area exclusively for ladies, offers comfort and convenience to weary travelers. Three strategically placed "loopholes" or "scuttles" provide efficient housing for luggage while a monstre counter spanning an astonishing 120 feet accommodates up to six landing-waiters who meticulously examine each bag. Not only does this warehouse prioritize functionality, but it also ensures utmost comfort for its visitors. The entire space is well-heated and ventilated while being brilliantly illuminated by gas lighting—a true testament to Victorian innovation. Published in the Illustrated London News in 1845, this engraving provides us with a glimpse into nineteenth-century Britain's bustling dockyards and their vital role in facilitating travel and trade connections across borders. Preserved by The Print Collector under unknown authorship, this image allows us to appreciate both the architectural grandeur and operational efficiency that defined St. Katherines Docks during its heyday.
