The Naval Review: Illumination of the Fleet - drawn by R. Leitch, 1856....thousands who had borne the cold and languor of the day had left...before the ships made this grand and brilliant demonstration. This was effected by simultaneously lighting up the yards and portholes with bluelights. At nine o'clock, gun fire, the whole fleet at anchor burst into light as by magic; the jets one above another, maintopmast high aloft, and the ports of each opened at once, showing a vivid glare between decks, caused an unusual roar of cheering from the shore, which was echoed and given back with interest from the boats of the legion afloat. This in the stillness of the calm night had an effect as imposing as it was rare, and cheer upon cheer applauded the spectacle. From nine to ten rockets were sent up thickly from the ships, and rained a golden shower upon the "floating capital". From "Illustrated London News", 1856

The Naval Review - Illumination of the Fleet,
EDITORS COMMENTS
a breathtaking illustration drawn by R. Leitch in 1856, captures the awe-inspiring sight of a grand naval display in the stillness of a calm night. Thousands of onlookers had endured the cold and languor of the day, but were rewarded with an unforgettable experience as the fleet at anchor made a spectacular and brilliant demonstration. At nine o'clock, the yards and portholes were simultaneously lit up with bluelights, causing the ships to burst into light as if by magic. The jets of flame one above another, maintopmast high aloft, and the ports opening at once, revealed a vivid glare between decks. This unexpected spectacle elicited an unusual roar of cheering from the shore, which was echoed and amplified by the boats of the legion afloat. The illumination of the fleet had an imposing effect, as rare and impressive as it was unusual. From nine to ten, rockets were launched thickly from the ships, raining a golden shower upon the "floating capital." The Illustrated London News reported on this spectacle in 1856, leaving a vivid description for future generations to marvel at the grandeur of the naval display. This image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the power and majesty of the navy was on full display for all to see.
