Nakajima Mamoru 11, Radial 14 Engine, Circa World War II. Creator: Fuji Koku Keiki

Nakajima provided Japan with its first large radials by building licensed Bristols beginning in the late 1920s, and Gnome-Rhone engines beginning in 1936. Nakajima built three 14-cylinder radial engines. The pre-World War II Mamoru possibly shares characteristics with the Pratt & Whitney R-2000. It was the most powerful 14-cylinder engine ever built, with versions at 1, 790 kW (2, 400 hp) and one of the largest at 44.49 L (2, 715 cu. in.). This engine is of the type that powered the World War II Japanese Nakajima B6N Navy Carrier Attack Bomber Tenzan Type 11 (Allied Code Name Jill). Between 1941 and 1944, 200 engines of all Mamoru series were manufactured, but these were generally not considered successful. After 1945, the company became Fuji, building airframes only

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Nakajima Mamoru 11, a remarkable radial engine that played a significant role during World War II. Created by Fuji Koku Keiki, this powerful engine was one of Japan's first large radials and was built under license from Bristols in the late 1920s. In 1936, Nakajima began producing Gnome-Rhone engines before developing their own series of 14-cylinder radials. The Mamoru engine, possibly influenced by the Pratt & Whitney R-2000, stood as the most potent 14-cylinder engine ever constructed. With versions boasting an impressive output of up to 1,790 kW (2,400 hp), it also ranked among the largest with its sizeable displacement of 44.49 L (2,715 cu. in. ). This particular type powered the Nakajima B6N Navy Carrier Attack Bomber Tenzan Type 11 (known as Jill by Allied forces) during World War II. Despite manufacturing around 200 engines across all Mamoru series between 1941 and 1944, they were generally considered unsuccessful due to reliability issues. Following Japan's defeat in WWII, Nakajima transitioned into Fuji and focused solely on building airframes. Displayed against a striking black background in this image from Heritage Images at the National Air and Space Museum (NASM), viewers can appreciate both the complexity and craftsmanship behind this engineering marvel. The photograph serves as a testament to Japan's aviation history during one of humanity's darkest periods – World War II – while highlighting technological advancements made during that time.
