EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the proposed Music-Hall to be erected in the Surrey Zoological Gardens in 1856. The Surrey Zoological Gardens, located in London, were undergoing an extensive makeover under the supervision of a renowned landscape surveyor. The gardens were to feature terraces, aviaries, fountains, and a vast array of flowering plants, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and enthusiasts. The Music-Hall, a significant addition to the gardens, was designed to showcase vocal and instrumental music of the highest class. With an auditorium capable of accommodating an impressive 10,000 persons, it was set to become a hub for music lovers. For those who preferred to enjoy the music in fine weather, a noble terrace encircling the building offered a perfect promenade. The construction of the Music-Hall had already commenced, following the designs of the esteemed architect, Mr. Horace Jones. The grand architectural design, a pictorial masterpiece by Danson, was set to be a prominent novelty in the gardens. Sadly, the Music-Hall only enjoyed a brief existence, closing its doors in 1862. This photograph, captured by Smyth, offers a glimpse into the grand plans for the Surrey Zoological Gardens and the Music-Hall, which promised to offer visitors an unforgettable experience. The image is a testament to the rich history of London's gardens and the role they played in the cultural and social landscape of the city during the Victorian era.
